adopt. The site upon which it serves is a plateau of about 155 yards by 115 yards, of which the larger side commands the harbour, and which, being in fact a portion of the hill side, was marginally a piece of rough rocky ground with a rapid fall toward the sea, Phatin Stn.
From the outset, there could have been trouble in adapting the buildings to the site but none which might not have been readily overcome with care. While the plans were in the course of preparation, works were undertaken in the colony for cutting down the site to a more level area. Apart from the fact that such alteration could in itself render useless the plans prepared for the original site, the preceding was originally ground regularly unfortunate. It is admitted that building on a slope is somewhat strongly marked close to it would be better, both for the sake of surface drainage and external ventilation, to build on the slope rather than bring the building in an excavation: in this particular case the result has been to create a bank of considerable height along the greater portion of the land sides of the site.
