FREE CHURCHES CORONATION
DR. BARNES' PLEA FOR FULLER REPRESENTATION NEGOTIATIONS for Free Church leaders to take part in
the Coronation ceremony, have it is understood, been considerably advanċed. The matter, is being con- sidered by the Government and the ecclesiastical authori- tics.
Dr. Barnca, Bishop of Birmingham, supported the suggestion in a sermon recently at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace, and subsequently an important statement on the suggestion was made by the Rev. M. E. Aubrey, Moderator of the Federal Council of the Free Churches. He said: "I greatly appreciate the reference Dr. Barnes has made. Free Churchmen generally-desire-that-in-view-of-their- numbera and place in the nation's life they should have a share in nil services in which national religious feeling is expressed.
"We do not believe in estab- lishment, but we do belleve in recognition. Unless recognition is freely and generously given a vigorous demand for disestab- ishment is sure to be revived.
"STRANGE AND UNFAIK“
"It seems strange und unfair that free Churchmen should have no shure in the Coronation service or at the Armistice Day services at the Cenotaphi
"We realise that the present form of the Coronation service, which is throughout Anglican, does make it dificult to bring in a Free Church
voice.
"Out of respect for the King we should not like to make his Corona- tlon an occasion of religious dispute nor should we desire to violate the consciences of our Angilean brethrent. "We think, however, that steps course to should be taken in 'due

Dr. Barnes particularly mentioned as one General Evangeline Booth who should take part in the Corona- tion ceremony, and u high official of the Salvation Army told the News Chronicla: grateful
"I am sure the Army would be, to Dr. Barnes for his refer- ence to the Salvation Army.
"There would be no healtancy on
"I heartily endorse Dr. Barnes' suggestion. Although the Free Churches would welcome a change, they are unlikely to press for it for Jear of embarrassing either the Crown or the Anglican authori
zien.
"I am convinced that the potte
Dntion na whole would welcome a change.. After all, the Free Churches repre- sent more than half the people.
Negotiations to make a colour Alm of the Abbey service are in progress, and the BBC. Is expected to broad- cost at least a portion of the service, although no- official statement hus yet been made,
