The Wind does the Work

N

EW records will be made, new thrill will be found and, probably, several. dainty. craft will be wrecked when lo-day, at Great Hucklow, in Derbyshire, the British Quding Association opens its week

of gliding competition,

hardy, hard-working

and almost tire- somely enthusiantic

men and wonen who, literally, soar on the wings of the wind, have made up

Those

To-day the British Cliding Competition begins. In space and silenco, without the sovage noise of engines, mon will pit their wits against the wind. Using the wind to drive him through the water, the yachis man also travels in a conflict which is mora, peaceful than a town-dwellor's idlönoss.

GLIDING

their minds to do next week all those things that they have been striving for during the past year.

Cajoling the wind with deliberate Louch and hopeful heart, they in- ted to woo the air eddies to carry them unheards of distances through the silence of the sky. while others, whose umilitons dir- fer. will watch hourly for the longed-for conditions when ther- mals" and "up-currents arrive to enrry them and their craft higher and higher into the sky until, new

altitude records are. made.

Next week fa' gliding's biggest- week of the year. For weeks past men who have made gliding and wind currents a hobby and a selen- lifte study have been preparing their craft.

Those dainty, long-winged craft that have been bullt by hand, every rivel, every screw and every wire examined by an enthusiast, have been polished and rigged until- to borrow a yachtsman's phrase-- they are tight as an 'arp string."

Tha, incidentally, is the true charm of gliding... It is one of those few sports that have defled commercialism. Olding can be truthfully and bluntly said to be weless in itself.

T

n

T does very Hitle ma- terial good: it gives the plot no ability to travel, He is at the mercy of the wind. and he cannot tame the wind to his will as the natior can.

The pilot of a glider, in træet. must take his instructions from He can pit his skill the heavens.

against the wind and against those air currents and eddies that follow the contours of the ground and the bases of the clouds, but he can bever day to himself cheerfully: A nice day for a sal. I'll go to Hampstead."

Bo he must needs be lamehed into the air, and, if conditions are good and his skill suffelent, he must go where ho can. Its alin must be not to go places but to keep geing. Length of time in the air, distance covered in a straight le mid altitude attained aro the three goals of his Nying.

Boaring, though, is one of the most skilled sports there are, and in this alone it is valuable and thrilling

pastime..

A man or a woman who can claim

to be a real expert at the controls of a glider must have perfect co-ordination between eyes, mind and hand.

W

HEN salling there is time to think. A set of cir- cumstances will arise in which the skipper can consider his position, It is, he decides, an "entergency." But still there is time to think, to decide, and even to correct & wrong decision.

The gilder, though, leaves no room for mistakes. The decision must' ba made, the action must be taken-a de- cately judged and even more Ucil Zalety executed action-and the pilot. must rely on himself,

If he is wrong, he may have lost all the advantage of an upward current or a thermal lift, and be forced to land nominiously in the nearest fald and wait for the towing party to retrieve him and perspiro back to the hill top for another launching.

Qlding definitely teaches a man about tho air, yet despite the claims of gliding enthusiasts, it does in to train a power-plane pliot.

The knowledge of controls is, of ‚course, useful, although the "feel" of a glider is entirely diferent from that of the power-plane. But guiding ex... perience is of comparatively smail

The results, obviously, have been well in favour of the glider pilots, Thng have already learned the Unale faels of co-ordinating their hands and leet at the controls, and they have learned Intuitively what it feels like to be in the air.

But the students of neroplane pilotage continurd theta Iraluing, it in very doubtful whether, after the Orst Twelve hours of power flying, the glider-trained man would show any supremacy over his ab initio brother.

N

O'THING, however, can depress the gilding en- thuglast. Tell him that his sport is useless, and ho whi bring to you facts and Ngures about "air trains.'

In Russia' they have been experl- menting for

This lea has been tried in Enginnḍ. and I have watched it demonstrated in Moscow

Its inherent disadvantages, however, fail to live up to s romantic idea. The power needed to tow the machines, _the_comparatively, smail_load_possible for each one to carry, and the excep- tionally low speed at which the flying- train. Travels make it quile useless commercially.

But whoever crllicises-and the Government does not, for it has granted £5,000 a year subsidy to Bri- 1ish gliding-the enthusiasts will. Fo 01.

They have found a sport which couple's thrills with skill more closely than anything that was over before open to the ortiinary not-so-rich sports. 211 11.

SAILING

by K. S. JACKSON

Tis impossible to be much of a yachtsman without being some- | thing of a sailor and sharing in the tradition of the sea. It may seymi a far cry from the voyages of the explorers of the past, from Drake and Raleigh, to sailing for pleasure in these days, but within a certain mensure all sailing calls for the same qualities and uppeals to the same characteristics.

It has nothing congenial to offer those who wish to preserve the grandstand mentality all the time, and who believe that synthetic thrilla which may be bought are cheaper than those which only real ́experience yields,

Those who have tried salling will be the last to dispute that what is Enined by experience may be costly.

There are the times when your boat fail to go about, or "misses stays on a neat lee shore, owing: to a changing slant of wind or u cheeky slup on the weather bow from an extra frollesome wave, or some lack of alertness and judg- ment in putting the helmi down to the best advantage and at the right second for getting her round.

EARNINO Sailing will bring back many things we have a foolish ten- dency to lose and cease to prize as we grow up, but which in our Juvenile days we wisely held in high regard.

Quick hearing and keen sight, vigilant alertiness, observation and concentration, all play their part, and above all that quick but con- sidered judgment which makes the difference between just doing it and just not doing it.

It is not always easy to Indrė the slant of a shifting biɛežu by your canvas or burgee at the mast head, or the "feel" of the boet, or the look of the water; you must develop instinets and sense it.

Lying afloat in his tiny craft on the marvellous blue water of the Carth- brag Ben, he showed nie the treasures of exquisitely coloured shells and the corn he had taken from it.
