DOUMER WAS RAKED BY MACHINE GUN FIRE OFF PAKHOI RECENTLY WAS TOLD ME BY MEMBERS OF THE CREW WHEN I VISITED THE SHIP IN HARBOUR JUST.BEFORE ITS DEPARTURE YESTERDAY.
Evidence of the incident was forthcoming in the num- ber of holes and dents in the upper part of the vessel.
One of the binnacles in the wheel-house was smashed. A machine-gun bullet went right through one of the ventilators.
Altogether I counted ten bullet marks, and was in- formed that there were many others,
The incident occurred during the recent tension at Pakhoi be- tween the Japanese and the Chinese.
