SMILES AT

“RIDICULOUS

RESISTANCE" OF REDS ·

Lisbon, Sept. 28. Following the capture of Toledo, General Francisco Franco's forces are gathering themselves for a swift assault on Madrid.

Interviewed to-day, General Franco said there was no time to waste. "Madrid's plans for resistance make me smile," he added. "We shall get there as fast as we can march," he declared, "crushing whatever ridiculous resistance is attempted."

According to a military authority, the campaign against Madrid is expected to be as follows:

defences at Government forces are likely to establish their main Navalcarnero on the Madrid-Talavera road, and at Illescas, covering the vital Madrid-Valentia railway. The insurgents will concentrate near Olias del Rey, 40 miles from the capital and will launch an attack on the Government positions within a few days.

One commentator believes that an insurgent thrust at this point will be irresistible, as it will be carried out by veteran troops, highly trained staff officers and a fighting force supplied with the very latest equipment.-Reuter.

APPEAL TO ROOSEVELT

́ ́ Marshfield (Ore.), Sept. 28. Eight Coos County cllics appeared to be safe after being threatened all day on Sunday with farest fires which obliterated the towns of Bundon and Prosper, with the loss of at least seven lives.

Favourable winds all night battled with flames and kept them in control. although the flames licked the limits of Marshfeld, North Bend, Coquille, Pertorford, Gold Beach, Longinis and Myrtic Point Bridge.

•At present, the only danger is from a recurrence of Sunday's high winds.

Fires are still raging over 'ten thousand acres of forests. Most roads are closed, and Marshfield is cut off on the north by burning bridges. The Oregon coast highway Is also closed, due to falling burning trees.

LITVINOFF WARNS

AGGRESSORS

PEACE-LOVERS STRONGEST.

Genova, Sept. 28. - The outstanding feature of to-day's meeting of the League of Nations was a speech by M. Maxim Litvinoff, Russia's Com- missar for Foreign Affairs and chief delegate to Geneva, who pungently retorted to Herr Adolf Hitler's Nuremberg pro- nouncements.

M. Litvinoit declared that state leaders who enumerate vast foreign territories which they intend to selze cannot sincerely accept Article X; and a alate which preaches the Icgality of a so-called localised war cannot make

"We are far from objecting to al- tempts to reach an agreement with even the most aggressive countries, but we are against allowing them to dictate terms of negotiation, or pay- ing them a bonus for condescending to negotiate," M. Litvinoff concluded, ---Reuter.
