"His Excellency the Governor notices with regret that the Major General Commanding raises an objection to the Road passing too close to the Magazine enclosure at its South West corner.
This objection if persisted in and upheld by the Home Authorities would be fatal to the construction of the road as the Surveyor General reports the engineering difficulties occasioned by carrying the road further South of the Magazine Enclosure than some 200 feet, as great as to be incompatible with the means of the Colony to overcome them. Therefore the road which has long been looked forward to with much Public utility and as a work of convenience would have to be abandoned.
This result is the more to be regretted because so far back as February 1867, Major Bedral Eng through the Assistant Military Secretary forwarded to the Governor a letter from the War Office (1-377-19 # December 1866) stating H.M.'s Peel's unwillingness to assent to the construction of the proposed road in the absence of any strong Military Objections on the part of the Major General.
The latter then informed this Government that he had no objection to the road provided it did not approach...
