In this instalment of a Mrs. Pepys chronicle in purple ink the beautiful act- ress writes with extraordinary frankness of her husband.
"I made him marry me," she says, then she tells how she felt "numb all over" during her romantic interlude with George Kaufman, for whose arrest a warrant was issued when he failed to appear in court as a witness. These extracts fol- low:-~
"May 6, 1931: I think I have mentioned the play he [Kaufman] has just finished, 'Merrily We Roll Along." It is a great play, better than 'Dinner at Eight,' better than 'Royal Family.' I would give my eyes to be in it. I still build castles in the air.
