at Archarologists excavating Maiden Castle, the hill-top town near here, on which remains of civilisa- tions stretching from 2,000 13.C. 10 Roman times have been found, be lieve they may have made one of their most important discoveries.

Digging near the Roman temple which was found in the eastern end of the fortress, they come upon t succession of floors they dug deeper so they dug further into the past, until they came upon Stone Age remaina.

Deep down in one cutting they un- carthed to-day remains of a massive

timber structure.

The size of the post holes in which the frame of the building stond in- dicates that it must have been of con- siderable strength and importance. Its character is being investigated, but it may well be that in their third scuson at Maiden Castle the excava“ tors have stumbled on the remalos of an ancient temple almost on the same site as the temple which the Romans raised,

The massive timbers, It is certain, date from the earliest period of Mriden Castle, and the remains may throw light on the religion practised in England 4,000 years ago.

Further lengths of the entrenchments which surrounded the Neolithic town are being excavated and large quan- titles of pottery representing the England three main evilisations about 2,000 B.C. are being recovered.

"We find the three civilisations approaching from different directions and meeting here. The occupation of this village, as Maiden Castle then was, ended (as recent Ands cm- phasise) at the beginning of Bronze Age, soon after the 10th or 18th Century B.C.

The fifteen centuries between that date and the foundation of Malden Castle as we know it, still remain a blank, and it is now reasonably certain that occupation of the down- Jands ceased during those centuries In owing to continual drought. those days the climate-of-England was much drier than it is to-day.

"The sites we are exploring are amplifying our knowledge of the earthwork built on the same sile os this earlier village in about the Fourth Century .c., and subsequently developed into the elaborate "earth- work which we see to-day.

"The exploration of the eastern entrance, which was begun last year, is being continued, more especially in relation to the southern of the two openings of which the entrance con- sista.

"The ancient roadway is now being exposed to view and the relies found on it suggest that Maiden Castle was not finally abandoned as lown until some years after the Hopan Invasion. "The roadway lu flunked by kerbs of limestone, beyond which floors of huts and pits used for storage, and cooking are now being brought to light."
