Lovell's explanations on this and it thence appears that as such perambulation of the 500 feet contour has really taken place, as indeed I knew it was impossible it could without attracting the attention of the Colonial Authorities who would instantly have protested against encroachment.

Admitting even that there has been some perambulation beyond Boundary stones I would ask how much value can be attached to such perambulation when the most that can be stated by the gentleman who conducted it for the last seven years is that "in passing round from one to the other of these (the admitted Boundary) stones a close examination was made over the range of hills which can be readily done in most places far beyond the 500 feet contour there. No doubt it can be seen to beyond the 1000 feet contour whilst the eye could also take in most of the town of Victoria and Island of Hong Kong as well as the opposite mainland.
