WATCHMAN FIRES ON ALLEGED SMUGGLERS

As a result of a fight between Indian watchmen and alleged opium smugglers in the early hours of this morning, one Chinese seaman is dead and members of deck crew of the Douglas liner Haitan and an Indian night watchman are held by the police for questioning. The seaman, whose name is at present unknown, is said to have been one of the smugglers.. Subsequent to the affray, twenty small packages of opium, totalling 800 taels, were seized aboard the Haitan.
A sampan, which escaped, was said to have been loading the contraband when discovered by a watch-
man.
Shortly after 3 a.m. this morning, Sajan Singh, one- of the Indian watchmen aboard the Haitan, noticed the sampan quietly move alongside and commence unload- ing its cargo.
He immediately notified the Chief Watchman, Surtah Singh, who in turn notified the Master of the vessel, Capt. Farrar.
