(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH"}

London, July 29. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Samuel Hoare, announced in the House of Commons to-day that the Government had decided to give orders for two new battleships this year.

The contracts, will be given to Vickers, Armstrong, Ltd., for their Tyneside yard, and Cammell, Laird at Birkenhead.

It is intended that the keels will be laid down at the earliest possible moment, in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty, which will mean that work will start January next.

In order to expedite construction, the orders have been placed before the complete specifications are ready. It is therefore arranged that contracts be awarded now subject to a settlement price later. In the event of a disagreement on prices, the contractors undertake to accept the decision of the First Lord.
