peared on remand before Mr. Burgess at the Central Magistracy this morn ing, charged with persession of 115 pe-pin tickets in his shop at No.# Po Hay Tong Street, ground floor.
At yesterday's hearing, Sub-Inspec- tor Kirby nid that he, a Chinese and a Chinese detective's searched defendant's shop *1*1 July 21, and the tickets were dis- covered by the office boy on
shelf. Defendant denied ownership of the tickets and said the office boy had taken them from the right hand pocket of the incket he was wearing at the time of the search, in an at- Sub-Inspector
tempt to "frame" him.
said he was present at the time of the search and he was posi tive there was no pocket on the right hand side of the coat which the boy was wearing at that time. The de- fendant then said the pocket had been cut off since. Mr. Burgess examined the coat and found no trace of cut- ting on that part of the coat and remanded the case till to-day, during, which time the left hand packet of the cont wax to be cut off,
On the resumption of the case this morning, the coat was oner more pro- duced, minus its left pocket. Examin ing the coat. Me, Burgess süld the mrks left by the gutting of the left could be. clearly seen, while poeke the right hand pocket showed no suel traces
Me. C. A. Sutherton Russ, appear- ing for defendant, said that it was clearly
case of the police officer's word against that of defendant's, and asked Mr. Burgess Ln give the benefit. of the doubt to the defendant.
Mr. Burgess remarked that if there had been signs showing that the right pucket of the cont had been ent of. there would be a different. case to answer, Defendant would be fined $200, or three months' imprison ment.
