which became a complete ... the typhoon of September 1874. I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that in December 1875, Bishop Raimondi applied to this Government for a grant of three thousand dollars to be devoted to
the rebuilding of the Church.
I laid the application before the Legislative Council and after some discussion and after expression of opinion from Mr. Keswick to the effect that he doubted the propriety of principle of Governmental grants to any object of a purely
denominational character, the Council unanimously voted a grant of fifteen hundred dollars for the rebuilding of the ruined church, subject as on previous occasions to the condition that an equivalent amount be raised by private subscription.
As Bishop Raimondi has since notified me that the sum required to be raised by private subscription has already been collected, I have paid over to him the amount voted by the Legislative Council, and I have now the honour to request Your Lordship's ...
