BRITISH WARSHIPS IN READINESS ΤΟ ACT
Madrid, July 19.
The situation in Spain, and in the capital itself, remains critical. Many soldiers have taken advantage of the Government's offer to allow them to abandon their regiments if they do not sympathise with thein officers and hundreds have offered their services to the Government.
The authorities in Madrid have armed a mob, and taxicabs loaded with these "Red Militia" men, armed with rifles, revolvers and daggers are to be seen in the streets.
Several lorry loads of miners from the North-west of Spain arrived in Madrid to-day and placed themselves at the disposal of the authorities.
The rebels, however, are in possession of the broadcasting station and telephone exchange în Seville, though the Government claims to have the situation well in hand there, and elsewhere throughout the country.

GOVERNOR AND MAYOR
RETURN FROM H. K.
Canton, July 20.
Although there is martial law in Canton and the political situation is still confused, there appears to be more hope of a peaceful outcome. There have been no untoward incidents in Canton itself, though some authorities believe that the 30,000 Kwangsi troops in the close vicinity of the city may intend to attempt coup and seize Canton.
Meanwhile, both Lin Yun-kai, the civil Governor of . Kwangtung, and Liu Chi-wen, the Mayor of Canton, returned to the city this morning to resume their duties. They have come from Hongkong, where they had been for several days prior to the resignation and departure of General Chan Chai-tong.
Conditions in Canton city are at present returning to normal, from appearances.-Reuter and Special.
