2 Wild I am Satisfied that the public service would not suffer by the appointment of either of these Officers, who are all deserving of Your Lordship's consideration, I feel it my duty to express my opinion of their respective merits to enable Your Lordship to do justice between them, and to make the best selection for the performance of the duties of this important public office.
3 Mr Deane who now holds the Office of Captain Superintendent of Police, is a sufficiently efficient Officer with Sufficient capacity to fill the Office he applies for. He is in every way respectable though wanting... he stipulates for a Salary of not less than £1300 per annum at Your Lordship's discretion. Your Lordship will observe in a despatch by this mail that I have considered, and have recommended the Salary of £1000 per annum having regard to the general scale of Salaries in this Colony.
