Mormon Defends His Faith

Salt Lake City, June 10.

ANDREW JENSON, 85-

year-old assistant his- torian of the Latter Day. Saints Church, himself a rlescendant of a polygamous Utah Mormon family, re- vealed recently the premises on which he holds that nature intended more than one wife for every man.

Recalling the recent statement of Dr. Will Durant, philosopher, before the American Eugenics society, he found Durant's ob servation that polygamy has a more eugenic effect than mono- gamy entirely coincident with his own views.

The children of polygamous marriages tend to be mora vigor- ous, he explained.

"For the wife of a polygamous marriage. childbirth means less physical strain," he pointed out. "She is allowed a rest from the rigours of bringing forth new life, thus the issue is physically atronger."

MORE WOMEN

In plural marriages the early Mormon settlers of the Great Salt Lake valley also found a solution for a large predominance of wo- men which developed among the population, he said, touching on the history of polygamy in Utah.

"Religion has more appeal for women than for men," he said, "and, while the Church did not Buck to interest women more than men, we found that masionary work in Europe and in the United women States resulted in more coming to Utah. In fact, the element of polygamy often was a strong factor in bringing women to Utah from Europe, avhero wars had loft mon in great minority."

"But," he added, "by the time marriageable ago is reached, tho women outnumber the men. Wars and hazards of occupation tend to deplete the mala population more rapidly than the female."

Jenson emphasised that pollhor he пог the Mormon Church Advocate polygamy to-day, since Monogamy is both civil and church law-United Press.

"Government will stand expenses: and will also send some help in the way of money for the mother."
