He wrote to me. On one occasion I met Hearn at Itu Club, and he mentioned to me that he owed some money ($109 I think it was) to a prostitute in Gage Street. I said that I would walk up with him to the house and he would pay the sum which he owed, and he consented to do so.

We went up to the house and were shown into a sitting room, when all of a sudden Hearn disappeared with a woman. There was another woman there and she afterwards retained me again in the sitting room.

We then left and as soon as we had got outside he lied to me that he had paid the debt.
