FILIPINO FLIERS DEPART
NOW HEADING FOR HANOI
ON LONG TRIP
TO SPAIN
Nonchalantly stepping from their taxi to the plane which was waiting for thers, the two Filipino fliers, F. Arnaiz and -- Cairo, left Kat Tak Aerodrome this morning at 10.50 on the second leg of their flight to | Madrid.
The present hop is expected to take them to Hanol and they will spend the night there, since they do not expect to arrive at the city until about G
six hours after p.m. to-day, taking off. The aviators then plan to fly to Penang and then Calcutta.
There were not very many to ser the fliers off, but long before Arnaiz and Calvo arrived at the aerodrome a small band of the local Filipino community, headed by Mr. Lễ R. Ildefonso, were waiting to bid the men farewell.
The plane was thoroughly tested yesterday and stood ready waiting with tanks filed and her hull glisten- ing in the morning sun.
When they arrived, Arnaiz and Calvo packed up a change of clothes, accepted the meal which had been prepared for them and then stepped into the plane, spent five minutes warming the engine and then taxied to the far end of the field prepara- tory to taking off. Without more ado, the plane successfully and grace- fully gathered momentum as it came back towards the hangar and finally, with plenty of room to spare, rose in the air and set a direct course for Hanoi.
MAIL CARRIED
It was announced this morning that following the unfortunate malt in- cident in which the mail which the liera carrlod for Madrid was sent on by ship from here, the smaller bag of 600 covers which they had brought for Hongkong addressed to them- selves, was ro-stamped with local stamps, re-addressed to Madrid via Hongkong and then re-stumped in the G.P.O. This mail, which had been enrafully packed up in one of the now blue airmail bags, was hand- ed over the fliers as they departed. by Mr. Ildefonso and will be carried by them to their destination.
The aviators apont most of the carly part of the morning at the G.P.O. arranging for this to be done and their departure was delayed, as a result, from 9 a.m. whoh they had originally intended to leave, until shortly before 11 a.m. when their plano finally took to the air.
