M. Leon Blum and his new Government are con- fronted with an alarming general strike movement two days after taking office. At the same time there is a steady increase in the rate of the flight of gold, 320,- 000,000 francs having been rushed to New York by the liner Deutchland yesterday, bringing the total ship ments to the United States during the past six weeks to approximately $225,000,000.

Intensification of the constant speculation upon the possibility of early devaluation of the franc, is marked.

Meanwhile, the Government is making strenuous efforts to end, the strikes, which now involve over 500,000 workers, and have virtually paralysed many branches of industry, transport and production.
