Washington, May 25. Dispatches from London saying the British had per- fected a naval rifle capable of piercing armour plate twelve inches thick has caused some members of the House Appropriations Committee to doubt the wisdom of build- ing the two new battleships the Navy Department wants.
They indicated their intention to call naval experts for questioning before investing U.S.$80,000,000 to U.S.$100,- 000,000 in new capital ships.
