YORK STOCK EXCHANGE
MARKET IRREGULAR
YESTERDAY
New York, May 18. Swan. Culbertson & Fritz Dow Jones summary 'of yesterday's market: The market to-day closed Irregular after Wall Street's first Interpretation of the Supreme Court's decision regarding the Guffey Coat O, which was very
brought balllah, about an active spurt on the flour. Traders were heavy buyers and this pushed up leading Issues from one to three points. Later, however, traders switched to selling when the market falled to develop strength as Following had been anticipated. this, longs took their opportunity to realise their holdings and short covering was soon exhausted and the list drifted with the former lethargy, The

Liquor momentuin near the close. shares were weak throughout the day. Utility securities held their Gold |gains better than most groups.
mining shares staged an early de- monstration of strength. The bonds market Was Irregularly higher. Stocks on the Curb Exchange were irregularly higher, but trading was quiet.
Swan,
Culbertson & Fritz Watt Street Journal comment on 16/5 market: The world's surplus of food-stuffs is now at a very low level. The action of the market is perplex-
log
professional traders who are showing a tendency to withdraw as far as major operations are concerned, An indleation of the market's major nature may be supplied by London. Most brokers anticipate another up- swing rather than a further decline. The action of motor shures makes many traders wary of the current rise In these issues,"
S. C. & F. New York office cables: Stocks; The market made a dls- appointing response to the Supreme Court's invalidation of the Guffey Coal Act. We expect further irregu- lar heaviness. The Southern Rail- way Company's report for the March quarter shows a loss of $209,022 gainst a loss of $1,125,000 Inat year. Cotton: The disposal of the Government-sales quota of 1,000,000 bales is expected by June 1st. The orderly absorption of offerings is im- pressive. Six brókerage houses are bullish and three are bearish in their outlook.
Wheat: The rally tendency on the fact that the visible supply had de- creosed by 2,086,000 bushels was off- [set by scattered rains in the South-* West and a poor foreign, domestic and mill demand. We expect con- tinued relative strength in May wheat, but we do not anticipate any material advance in prices. The visible supply of corn has decreased ' by 410,000 bushels.

Naturally the players who interest most in University aide are the Freshmen. Most of them are known only by repute, and it is al- ways instructive to watch how a really stood school cricketer accom- modates himself to the teal of a Freshmen's trial, which more often than not is played in unpleasant weather conditions.
If school reputations count for anything, there would seem to be at least half-a-dozen outstanding players. Foremost among the newcomers. would seem to be W. Murray-Wood, of Mill Hill, who had a batting aver nge of nearly 50, and took 61 wickets for fewer than 10 rons each last sen-
Hon.
Murray-Wood, 11 spin bowler, played for the Public Schools against the Army, and took eight for 21 against Dulwich. He also made twa centuries for his schont, and is a brilliant fieldsroun-in fact a very | complete cricketer.
One can surmise, too, that D. M. Matthews (Felsted) and F. M. McL, Forster (Wellington) are batsmen above the average, as both returned figures of over 80; Foraster's average was 80.12 und Mathews' 81.38. Fora- ter made 130 against the Free Foresters and 60's against the M.C.C. and Berkshire Gentlemon.
FIGHTING FOR PLACES Matthews scored nearly 900 runs, including four centuries, and his ab- sence from the Lord's matches was due to bin being unable to accept the captain, Geoffrey Foster, and M. H, invitation. D. E. C. Steel, the Ringby Bell, the Uppingham captain, who | played at Lord's,' will all be fighting
for places in 'the Oxford eleven,
Other batsmen include A. P. D. Montgomery (Rapton), the hockey Blue, J. D. Eggår, the Winchester captain, P. C. Reynell (Itugby), "and ¡E. J. II. Dixon (St. Edward's School).
Montgomery has a sound style.

Some very good bowlers are also coming into residence, including K. N. Bond (Horruw), P. M. Whitehouse: (Marlborough), P. K. Mayhow (1Ini- Jeybury), M. S. Warman' (Shrewa -bury), G. B. Stangor (Radley), and C. T. L. McClintock (Epsom). war- man is probably the best. He bowls leg-breaks, and took eight for 19 against Rossall and five for against Malvern, but like all bowlers of this type he is inconsistent. May could not accept owing to an injured hew was invited to go to Lord's, but
