Britain Builds Deadly Plane, Now Worries About Defence Against It

to

The neroplano shown in the layout is the Intest thing in instruments of destruction, and illustrates graphically the armament-maker's art. The aeroplane, which is the new R.A.F. "Fairey", bombing neroplane, is so fast that it makes combat aeroplanes useless. With o speed of over 300 miles per hour, non-breakable glass encasements for the pilot and gunner, special fighting equipment in addition bombs, the now aircraft marks a long forward step in the development of attacking aeroplanes. So effective is the machine, however, that British aviation experts are wondering what they can build now to act as a defence against it. Ordinary fighting neropinnes' cannot cope with the speed and manoeuvrability of the "Fairey"; it has retractable undercarriage, three-blade propeller, spilt wing flaps to reduce landing speed, all-metal airframe except for control surfaces, and a new 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce engine. It has a wing spread of 54 feet and an overall length of 42 feet. Bombs are carried inside the wings.
