Local Arrangements To be In Hands of Big Committee: Jubilee as Precedent

"Telegraph" Special Representative ALTHOUGH no official arrangements have as yet been

made in Hongkong for the local celebration of the Coronation of King Edward the Eighth a year hence, I was informed by a highly placed official this morning that the arrangements will probably follow those made for the Coronation in May, 1912, of King George V.

It is believed that the actual Coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey either on Thursday, May 201 or Thursday, May 27.

Hongkong's celebrations will last a week and will be on an unprecedented scale.

As soon as the actual date is known, the Hongkong Govern- ment will appoint a Coronation committee which, like the Silver Jubilee Committee last year, wil be fully representative of the entire population of the Colony.

It is most Hkely that this Committee will take the Silver Jubilee celebrations as a pre-

(early next year. Many residents who would ordinarily have taken their long service leave this, year; 1937, in order to be in London for have postponed their holidays until the Coronation.

London hotels and residentinis already report heavy bookings and in many instances they are pletely looked out a year ahend.

AN EARTHQUAKE A DAY FOR TEN YEARS

RECORDED IN HONGKONG

During the last ten years there has been an earthquake in Hongkong every day, according to the Annual Reports of the Director of the Royal Observatory,

Seismographical records are 4. part of the work of the Hongkong weather bureau.

During Inst your more 'quakes were recorded inan in any other year during the past decade. One of the 475 recorded shocks-an average of almost ten a week- was the 'quake that completely wrecked Quetta.

Looking at the statistics com- piled by the local Royal Obser vatory since January 1, 1925, there seems to be a tendency for number of 'quakes to

the

increase.

In 1925 only 150 were recorded. With one exception the figures for each year have gradually crept up September is said to be the mouth in which most of the world's until they reached the record of tremors occur. NEW LONDON PLAY

Mr. S. I. Hsiung, author of "Lady Precious Stream," the Chinese play which is nearing its 500th performance at the Little, Theatre, has arrived in London' with his wife.

The author of "Lady Precious Stream" and his wife.

He told a reporter that his wife, who was born in Hong kong, is the, "Lady Precious 'Stream" of his imagination, and that she inspired him to dramatiso the 1,000-year-old legend.

Even in the atolld Hampstead house where the reporter saw them the flowing black silk robes of Mr. Hsiung and the tight- fitting national costume of his wife seemed to bring something of the atmosphere of a Chinese fairy tale.

Mr. Hinng's next play is to bo oven more genuinely Chinese than "Lady Precious Stream"--for the entiró cast is to bo Chinese;

"It in entitled "The Western Cham- ber. and originates from a short atory dating from the 8th century," ho said.

"I shall produce it in Shanghat with Chinese actors, playing in Eng- Hah and Chinese on alternate nights, and then bring the entire cast to London."
