The advocacy of an Annual Fine Arts Festival in the Far East was put forward by Mr. Laszlo Schwartz, the ominent lungarian humorist, in an interesting address given to the members of the longkong University Association in the Union Assem- Aris bly all last night. The subject of Mr. Schwartz's loctare was "Can Art Dispel Depression?".

The lecture outlined what a festival of that kind might do for Hongkong In the matter of art, trade, and tourist possibilities. It would estab- Hish beneficial and mutually recipro- cative.cultural and spiritual ties be tween the East and the West, said

Mr. Schwartz.

A large gathering of members and their frienta were present at the lecture, inchaling Mr. T. A. Martin. President of the Arts Association, The speaker was introduced by Mr. Chong Yum-yue, the Chairman.

Mr. Schwartz said he had had in mind for a long time the idea of thin Annual Fine Arts Festival, but it present visit to the had taken his Colony to bring it to full flower. The matter concerned not only Hoa kong, but was of international signi- Hleance. Sponsored in Hongkong, the schemo would bring the greatest of returns to the Far East.

The Festival would consists of a completo representation of the Fine Arts of every land in the Far East. Each Government would be asked to co-operate in making it a hugo and hitherto unheard of event, that Music and other Art festivals would alongside it. Every land in the Part would be asked to send its best per- formers and creative artists, as well an the works of their best artists, ancient and modern, to be represented.

The speaker referred to the tourist possibilities of such Festival.

The invitations sent to the Far Eastern nations to participate would also bu sent to the West, and it would make them take notice. Several instances the were cited. Had England taken half the trouble on behalf of its art and cultural products that Lancashire did to advertise its cotton products, she

would have been able to develop a new market in the East that outdis- tanced the wildest Imagination.

For example, there was the world- wide success of the Oberammergau Passion Play, the Salzburg Musical festival, glorying the works Mozart, the Music festival in

Bey reuth dedicated to the genius of Wagner, the attractions of Budapest and Venice. There was also Waikiki Beach, made famous by its hula-hula dances. Hongkong could offer

The exchange of art values as well as art products between the East and

the West on such a huge scale would

be instrumental is creating new mar- kets for the East as well as the West, The West had still much to learn of the artist of the East, and if they could be brought out hero there would be much more rospect for Eastern art than ever before.

The Festival would bring a volume of profit to the hotels, steamship companies, transport, dealers of art works, and othora in the Colony. These concerns could advertise the
