U.S. LEGATION BELEAGUERED

SIKHS ORDERED TO RAISE SIEGE

FOREIGNERS FIGHTING ETHIOPIAN MOBS

Washington, May 4.

Following reports by wireless from the United States Minister at Addis Ababa that the Legation has been besieged for hours by a fierce mob of Ethiopians, Mr. Cordell Hull, the Secretary of State, has ordered the Legation's abandonment.

The Minister had previously asked Washington to urge the British Government to tell the British Legation in Addis Ababa of his plight, and to request assistance from Sir Sidney Barton, British Minister.

Mr. Hull's order, flashed back to the U. S. Minister, Mr. Engert, followed the receipt of information from the British Foreign Office that the British Legation at Addis Ababa, manned by only a handful of Sikh soldiers and British officers, was unable to spare a detachment to assist in the defence of the U. S. Legation.

The British Government had, in- structed the Minister at Addis Ababa

to send a convoy to evacuate the Americans.

Mr. Hull's stalenient follows:

"In view of yesterday's attack on the Turkish Legation and to-day's ! altacks on the French, Helgian and j Ainerican Legations, and the fact that the American Legution is not prepared for adequate defence, the British offer has been necepted."----|

The announcement gave the first information of attacks on the French and Belgian Legations.--Renter.

DELAY EXPLAINED

Rome, May 4. According to an unconfirmed re- part, the delay of the entry of Italian troops into Addis Ababa is due to negotiations for the peaceful surren- der of the city. The Italian authori ties naturally prefer an entry by agreement, instead of by force.

It is not clear what local authori- ties are participating in the negotia: tlens, but it is rumoured the chief of police and one other official might go out to meet the Italians some miles from the capital--Reuter Special.

(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH")

ROME, MAY 5.

THE THREAT OF EUROPEAN HOSTILITIES IS NEARER TO-DAY THAN AT ANY TIME SINCE THE INVASION OF ETHIOPIA COMMENCED.

Italian officials are making no effort to hide their resent- ment at the British and French attitudes since Emperor Haile Selassic abandoned Addis Ababa, especially in view of the French action in receiving the Negus at Djibouti and quartering him at the Governor's palace as the guest of the French Govern- ment.

They are also incensed at the British action in giving the Imperial refugees asylum in Palestine, and providing a cruiser to transport them to Haifa.

Finally, the continued French and British recognition of Emperor Haile Selassie as the sovereign of Ethiopia rankles in the Italian 'mind.-United Press.

Delicate Case

Rome, May 4.

Authoritative sources here state the flight of Emperor Haile Selusale to neutral territory, and his transpor- tation to Palestine by a British war- a complex and ship, is viewed as delicate case, and is being carefully

studied.

The Emperor sailed for Haifa, en route to Palestine, aboard II.M.S. Enterprise, having been received at Djiboull as a guest of the French Government. It is expected that later he will go to England.

Mr. Anthony Eden, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, told the House of Commons, to-day that the Negus had renounced direction of nitairs," -United Press.
