ORDERS FOR CURRENT WEEK
A MAN was told by a heart specialist he could not hope
to live more than three years.
He worried over the future of wife, and daughter, both in valids; feared he would not have: enough money to leave them.
So he decided to defraud the Inland Revenue on hils incomo lax.
But he did not die. Ten years Inter he was still alive. —Pearful-of-exposure, he went to 6 tax expert: was advised to con- fess.
Officials were merciful. They investigated his story, appreciated his motives, mude him pay much less than if he had committed the fraud merely to benefit himself.
This true story was told recently by Mr. Ronald Staples 'to a meet- Ing at Charing Cross Hotel of the Institute of Taxation, of which he is president. These were other jrevelations he made:-
"It is no longer the desire of the Revenue lo close down a profit- earning business to ensure the payment of heavy penalties.".
