Breach Of Promise Cases
Increasing
So Are Awards To Alted"
THE number of aciuns for damages for breach of prome to marry is increas- ing. The average amount of damages| awarded in s cases is increasing.
The late Mr. Justice McCardic was outspoken on the subject. He once said:
ago far from assisting the womanhood of this country by having these actions, I consider that the' dignity of womanhood is lowered. ... I think there is no more degrading occupation for a judge and jury than to estimate damages in such a case.”
"HEART BALM"-£10,000
In the United States such litigation flourishes with especial sentimental virulence. Claims for damages "heart balm"-of £10,000 are common.
Some States, including New York and Illinois, have outlawed these suits, but their action is thought to be unconstitutional.
Two unusual brench actions have been brought in the past month.
Mr. and Mrs. Dorn
had been divorced, and the husband admitted a promise to remarry his former wife. The case was nettled.
This week Miss Amme Reyers was awarded £8,000 damage: against Mr. Thomas Green. For thirteen years she had believed herself to be his wife, and, only re- cently discovered that ils real wife was alive,
A married man cannot be sued for breach if the plaintiff knew he was married even if Iris promise to marry is made after a decree nist has been obtained against him and before it is made absolute.
the
"PUBLIC POLICY" This was the judgment of Court of Appeal when Mins Emily Fender sued Sir Anthony Mildmay. She was awarded £2,000 damages by the jury, but the Court of Ap peal held that the promise-made] by a man still married-was vold ous grounds of public policy. Lord Justice Greer dissented from this judgment.
Actions for breach of promise brought by men are extremely rare. The most recent, brought by a Mr. Love against The Team Day in the

Quins Make A Big Hit In Their First Film
ANTICS THROW AUDIENCE INTO SENTIMENTAL ECSTASIES
THE famous Dionne quintuplets now seem well on their way to becoming America's favourite film stars. Their film-although they only appear in the last ten minutes of it-has had a preview before an ordinary kinema audience and the quintuplets sent the audience into sentimental ecstasies, states United Press.
They waddle out of scenes on stubby, uncertain legs. They crow and make baby noises at the cameraman, and "steal" scONEN from each other.and the supporting cast.
Dr. Alan Dafoe, who brought the Dionnes into the world.
Jean Hersholt plays the part of the doctor in make-up highly reminiscent of Dafoe,
He is the doctor of a northern village, struggling to gain a hos- | pital for his tile community.
Because of his insistence, he is replaced by a new doctor and. threatened with arrest for failure to obtain the medical licence he was too poor to buy.
Then the "quins" arrive, with his help to make the village famous, and everybody is happy for ever after!
