GOVERNMENT FACES TROUBLES FIRMLY

HOLDS BIG MAJORITY ON CONFIDENCE VOTE

London, April 6.

On the procedure motion, treated as a vote of confidence in the House of Commons to-day, the Government was given an opportunity by critics in the Opposition to re-state its intentions and ambitions with respect to the politically confused position in Europe.

The Government spokesmen reiterated the intention to face the Italo-Ethiopian problem squarely, insisting upon a termination of hostilities before there could be conciliation; and, in the matter of the Rhineland dispute, to refuse to admit there was no further opportunity for conciliation.

The Government was sustained by a vote of 361 to 145 on the vote of confidence.

It was with the object of regulariz-1 ing the position following last week's Government defeat, on the bill res-

peeting equality of treatment for both sexes in the civil service, that Mr. Stanley Baldwin, the Prime Minister, submitted a procedure motion which was to be treated as a vote of confidence.

He declared that although a good cuse could be made for Miss Ellen Wilkinson's proposal for equal wages, the time for such a change

ต was not yet ripe. There was widespread feeling that numbers of because were

men

Moreover, the cost of the equal pay proposal, it was estimated, would add £3,000,000 annually to the civil service bil.

The Prime Minister, believed, he sald, that the effect of Miss Wilkin- son's motion would be to clrcums- ! cribe, and not Increase, Incilities for the employment of women.
