I thought it a deserving case, and had much pleasure in informing him that I would propose an increase to his salary when the time came for bringing forward this year's Estimates.
James was, however, oversight on his part, not brought forward his application when the Estimates came to be voted, and his salary for 1876 was not increased as he had been led to hope would be the case.
Immediately upon ascertaining this I submitted his case to the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council, and suggested a salary of twenty dollars a month being placed upon the Supplementary Estimates of 1876. This amount being an increase to his salary was agreed, and I have the honour to request Your Lordship's sanction to Mr. Gray's salary being increased by that amount, which will bring his total pay up to £300.
