3/4th of the salary received, in others but me 1/2, whilst generally, I apprehend, the remittances will be under 1/4th, and in all cases it would, I
presume, be on the discretion of the Governor to regulate the amount of each order.
I have only further to suggest to Your Lordship the expediency of granting orders here to officers for their
home remittances at exchange of
day.
I
am
not
unmindful that in all Governmental transactions 4/2 is the rate
fixed by Law for the Settler.
However,
1. The Law must, however, be changed
in such respect
as it would be
impossible for the Government to maintain the rate of 4/2 whilst the Bank's and Traders
generally both large
and small
pass the Dollar at its current value. Indeed the Government has, save to its officer,
practically abandoned the legal rate and notably
in respect to the Military Contribution, the last
quarterly payment of which was paid at the then exchange
