GOOD TALENT FOR ARMY BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Of The Mixed:

Doubles

(By "Veritas").

Only a miracle can now stop Club de Recreio from winning for the second year in succes- sion the mixed doubles badmin- ton league. Last evening they defeated Chinese Recreation 'Club in an all-important match by six games to three, and as it is inconceivable that they will lose any of their outstanding games, the championship is theirs.

They made frightening start inst night when (1,C,, showing less ner yourners, won the first two games, but the homesters recovered and annexed the text five in a row. But they were hard pressed throughout the evening and we made 14 play all exit to win.

All the playguns were affected by the importance of the occasion and this was reflected in their strokes and number of unusual errors which were committed. J. d.

Remedios, generally the most reliable player in the Colony on his backhand could not got it into working order until hin second gaine, while Carvalho's over-¦ head was very spasmodic during the early exchanges.

At St. Andrew's Church fall, Recreio "" enjoyed a clean sweep against St Andrew's, although the majority of the games were well con tested and the Saints were, perhaps, a little unlucky it to win a gaiUS here and there.

LEADING PERS ONALITIES TO

BE SEEN NEXT MONTH Exceptionally good talent is promised for the Hong- kong Area Army Boxing Championships which will be staged on April 4 and subsequent evenings at Murray Barracks, and although Colony fight fans have had cause to bewail the absence of fistic entertainment here for the past two years, they will be given plenty of opportunity to revise their opinions during next month.

In addition to some outstanding; hoxers in the East Lancashires and Royni Welch Fusiliers, this year's tournament is to be enriched by the presence of loading scrappers from the Royal Ulster Rifles.

Up to the present the Ulster Rifles had had small opportunity to exhibit their prowess at sport, but judging from past performances, it is certain they will figure prominently in the Arca Boxing Championships.

OF EXCEPTIONAL ABILITY

Since leaving Belfast in 1912 the Rifts have taken seriously to boxing and now boast a fighter of exceptional; ability in Lance-Corporal Whelan, the inter-services featherweight champion of Egypt. In 1935 he fought Nefousi the Jewish Mazaab! featherweight title holder and only lost by a narrow margin of points.

The Riles will also look forward with confidence to the displays of L/Cp). Quinlan, inter-services middle- weight champlon and, Cpl. Henderson, a hard-hitting "old-stager."

E, LANCS' PROSPECTS Boxing representatives of the East Lancashires are at present in strict training at Shamshulpo for the ap- proaching tournament. The regiment has always been in the forefront in Army boxing and the talent this year, even if not quite up to some of its predecessors, can be relied upon to put up an excellent show.

The welterweights are a very even lot, and the Royal Weich hope to pick up some useful points through them. Best middleweighis are Cpl, Weaver and Fus. Davies (43), who beat his opposite number in the East Lanca shires last year.

L/Cpl. Davies (62) the rugby three-quarter, in spite of a rugger in. Jury, hopes to box light heavyweight. Ho boasts an amazingly strong punch. Even if he is unable to turn out the Battalion has a number of other mon who will prove dangerous to any of

L/Cpl. Carlisle the heavyweight, has improved a lot since last year, and he will certainly give a vozy creditable account of himself,

Altogether the Fusiliers, like the East Lancashires and Ulster Rifles, feel they have a sound, level team, and patrons of the tournament are guaranteed excellent entertainment.

Here is the complete programme for the tournament.
