Snake Said To Bring Ill Luck
East Grinstend (Sussex), Mar. 10. HIGH over East Grinstead's new £30,000
hospital, on top of the tower, is a ser- pent-symbolical of Esculapius, god of healing. It will not be there much longer. A weather vane is to replace it at a cost of £63.
Superstitious people in East Grinstead sigh with relief. For they regard the serpent as an omen of ill luck..
In support of their reasoning, they point to the facts that:
It rained heavily when the opening ceremony was performed by Princess Helena Victoria on January 8.
The hospital mairon, Miss Gurlett, and 11 nurse themselves became patients on the first day. The matron had quinsy trouble; the nurse suffer- ed from a poisoned arm.

Two patients, nu elderly woman and eighteen-month-old chill, died within ten days of the opening.
A steriliser broke down. All the work of the sinister ser- pent said the superstitious ones.
WHAT PATIENTS SAID
The hospital authorities do not agree. Though most of them dia- like the snake, they think the £83 could very well have been used for other purposes.
This is what some of the patients said-
Mrs. Dixon, undergoing a serious operation to-morrow: "Snakes don't trouble me-It's ridiculous."
