Following the beckoning finger of adventure, more than 1,700 young men recently applied for appointment to the New Guinea service as cadeta. High as the required qualifications are the com- petition for these posts is so keen that the selection is proving difficult. Sixteen cadets are required and so far only three have been appointed.

JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION & BRIGADE in the life of this Colony are well-known to the majority of residents, but it is not generally realised that this SOCIETY, which has no accumulated reserves, and, since the formation of the ASSOCIATION in 1833, HAS RECEIVED NO GRANT FROM PUBLIC FUNDS, is in urgent need of money to carry on its varied activities.
