Washington, Mar. 4. The United States Treasury to-day] announced that it would henceforth purchazo Canadian newly-mined allver, only through the Bank Canada, however,

The Treasury insisted that there WAN particular significance to this move and that it will only centralise the buying of newly-mined Canadian metal, to be bought at the prevailing market prices.

Some ebservers believe the ar. rangements include an agreement to purchase all or a certain percentage of the Canadian production, which amounts to about 10,400,000 ounces the Treasury command of 62 per cent. annually. If this is so it would give of the world's production, since it is already taking all American and Mexican newly-mined metal.

The arrangement is also bellayed to imply Amerien's gradual withdrawal from the world's ailver trading market-Beuter.

He admitted he would try to per undo Mr. Hu Hun-min, the famous southern statosman, to go to Nanking in order to effect a better under- standing between Chinese leaders.

Work on the lengthening and widening of No. 1 Wharf was complet. C ed early in the year. The wharf is now 750 feet in length and 81 feet wide. There is shelter in the centre which proves very convenient to friends of passengers waiting on the wharf dur- ing the hot and rainy season.

At our last meeting I

mentioned that dredging was in progress in the vicinity of the wharves. This was completed during the year and we were called upon by Government for $201,571.00 as the Company's con tribution, which Wan considerably more than anticipated. Extensivo dredging to a depth of 34 feat was carried out in the harbour, and your Directors had to agree to bear the cost of dredging a similar depth

to between the wharves and over an aren 100 feet off the son ends. It subsequently transpired that the Government scheme did not, as we thought include dredging that acc- tion of the harbour which would be necessary to permit deep-draught to approach our longest wharf.

to your Board to be reasonable grounds. They maintained that the dredging of an aren, which was neces- sary in the general interest to enable the port to accommodate modern vessels, should not fall upon the Wharf Company. I regret to any, however, that our protests were un- availing and in the end we had no option but to submit to this additional expense.

GENERAL RESERVE Turning to the accounts, you will notice that the balance sheet has been revised by creating a General Reserve Account. This has been formed by absorbing the premium on the new share issue. the Equalisation of Dividend Fund and the Repairs and Renewals Account. In the Proit and Loss Account, the amounts written off as depreciation have been adjusted to round off the values of property and plant under fixed Assets.

Of the new issue of 10,000 shares offered to

shareholders during the year at a premium of $20 each; 7,630 were taken up, realising aprofit of $190,075, and leaving 2,801 Shares still unissued.

There does not appear to be any- thing else that requires special men- tion, and I now bag to propose that. the accounts be adopted as presented. Mr. Dodwell seconded the motion which was adopted.

OTHER BUSINESS Mr Thomson proposed and Murdoch seconded confirmation of Mesara. Johnson, Von Haonisch and Goodwin being invited to fill vacancies on the Board of Directors, also of the invitation to Sir Robart Ho Tung and Mr. L. Kadoorie to join the Board. The motion was carried.
