Upon the return of Mr. Rozaris, Interpreter to the Supreme
Court, from leave of absence, his
locum tenens, Mr. Bund, Clerk
in the Registrar General's Department,
returned to his duties in that Office, and this rendered
the services of Mr. Ball
of no longer necessary there. It was, however, thought by Mr. Austin
who was at this time administering the Government in my absence that a good opportunity was offered to supply the want that has often been felt at the Magistracy - an European medium through which to interpret between the Chinese and the Magistrates, and as Mr. Ball was reported to be a Chinese Scholar, and as he had conducted himself creditably in the Registrar General's Department, Mr. Austin, as a purely temporary measure, allowed him to officiate at the Magistracy as Assistant Interpreter and Clerk at a salary of $100 a month.
