Quarterly Returns to the 30th requests further information in connection with the appointments of Mr. Compool to be Assistant Superintendent of Police with a portion only of the salary attached to that office, and Mr. Ball to be Assistant Interpreter and Clerk.

With regard to Mr. Compool I must explain to Your Lordship that during the absence on leave of Mr. Wodehouse, Superintendent of Chinese Police, Mr. Inspector Compool was appointed to act in his place with the title of Acting Chief Inspector, and with half the allowance of £100 (which Mr. Wodehouse had been granted) from the Special Fund while acting in the capacity of Superintendent of Police.

Upon Mr. Wodehouse's return to the Colony Mr. Compool reverted to his old post of Inspector, but when W. Wodehouse was appointed Chief Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office, the Captain Superintendent of Police requested that Mr. Compool might again resume the acting appointment of Chief Inspector and be allowed to do so in the same capacity with an additional salary of $20 a month.
