APPEAL FOR SUPPORT OF HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
An appeal to flower lovers was broadcast from ZBW last night by a Committee member of the Hongkong Borticultural
Society, under the poeudonym "Florent."'ils said:
This is an appeal to all of you who
T love flowers, which may well be to all of you, for everyone loves flowers, It is a natural human instinct, mani- feated by children from carly infancy, and there is no difference, in this manifestation between any one nation. ality and another. This Colony is full of flower lavors, hence the flourishing lato of the industry which supplies our vases; our fare well baskets of flowers every time a liner leaves the local wharves; our bouquets at weddings, when we attempt to foster the dawn of appro- clation' in some fair one's heart; "our buttonbolos; and, sadly enough, our wreaths. The flower stalls are well patronised, and hardly anyone for tunate enough to possess a sitting room of sorts goes, without at least ono vase or bowl of blooms, even if it be renewed not more often than twice a week,
Then there are those of us who have a balcony, maybe two balconies, with pots of plants that produce their quota of floral decoration: and the most fortunate of all, those who have gardens, whether a small patch or a large expanse, in which pretty things can be grown,

As will be observed it has been deemed advisable to make consider- able alterations in the form in which balance sheets were formerly present- ed to you, in order to show more clearly the position of the company under prevalling conditions.
The Directors, realiaing the effect of the reduced rentals now obtainable upon the values of your properties, have made a careful revaluation thereof, taking into account the enhanced value of the land in some few instances where the properties have been in our hands for many ears, but, at the same timo, drastic ally writing down the back value of others and of all buildings to the necessities of a progressive scheme of carly redevelopment.

The Horticultural Society Now, let us consider one of the biggest factors in the introduction of most of these species of flowers to the Colony-the Hongkong Horticul- tural Society. This society came into being many years ago, and staged an annual show for a while, I undor stand, two annual shows, one being a display of chrysanthemums in the carly winter. After a period of vicissitudes such as are met with by ali pioneer bodies, the Horticultural Society was resuscitated and plaerd on its present firm basis. But this result has only been achieved through the unrelaxed efforts of enthusiasts people who have sacrificed niuch time, and, be it added, money, towards the cultivation and display of flowers
