I give further proof of his British Nationality before any steps can be taken to recover compensation for his detention by the Spanish Authorities on board the "Marie Louise."
I at once, upon receipt of this, caused a letter to be addressed to Mr. Hodgkins in the terms of your Lordship's despatch, but I regret to state that he is now absent in Australia, and that a considerable time must therefore elapse before he can comply with your Lordship's instructions.
I may mention that I also addressed a letter to the United States Consul in this Colony on the same subject, but that he is at present unable to give me any information as to the Nationality of Mr. Hodgkin's.
