The British Government has commenced an official investigation into the means by which Italy obtained the secret report of Sir John Maffey to the British Foreign Office in respect to Italy's claims in Ethiopia and the possible effect of those claims upon British interests. Giornale d'Italia published this report yesterday.
However, the British Government does not seem to be incensed. It is asserted that the publication has proved the sincerity of Great Britain in demanding League penalties as a result of the invasion of Ethiopia, since Sir John Maffey's re- port apparently indicated that British interests in East Africa could not be disturbed by Italy's ambitions.
A spokesman of the Government said to-day that Sir John Maffey and a commission had been instructed to report on tho. facts, without recommending a policy, after Signor Leonardo Vitetti, a counsellor of the Italian Embassy, had informed Great Britain on January 29, 1935, regarding the secret Franco- Italian agreement in respect of Ethiopia.
This agreement was negotiated by | M. Pierre Laval, then French Foreign Minister, and Signor Benito Musso- lini, the Italian dictator.
However, the Government spokes- man made it clear that the report of Sir John's Commission was not utilised because the Cabinet refused to admit that the interests of Great Britain were not jeopardised through the proposed Italian conquest Ethiopia United Press
