UNCERTAIN EXCHANGE OUTLOOK

SHANGHAI WATCHES! POUND AND DOLLAR

CASH POSITION EASIER

Shanghai, Feb, B. Operations on the local exchange market during the last week suggest- ed that the cash position of the various banks is becoming very much easier, but unfortunately there are few signs so far that money is being put into circulation to oil the wheels of commerce and industry, suys Finance and Commerec.

The chief interest is still centred on the fluctuations of the London- New York CIONS-rate. These fluc tuations are always so near the level of 5.01, upon which our exchange rates are based, that they naturally create a feeling of uncertainty.

At the opening of the market on January 28, owing to the rise in the cross-rate, dollars were higher and snarkot sterling was lower, but the anticipated lower cross-rate and buyera of kojno banks were good doliary at 4.093 to 4.994. On the following day, the market was firm. owing to speculators selling and te liquidation of the February/March over-bought position.

The Government banks acquired ap. proximately G$3,000,000 from the foreign banks, of which one British bank is reported to have sold over $1,000,000.

Liquidation of February position by speculators continued and they sal n 1/2 and 2912 on January 31.

VOTE FOR REPEAL

The point that the bigger the size of a work of art, the higher the price cannot, of course, be unreasonable; but the question arises as to whether the quality in, the picture has been proportionately increased when it has been "carried off" in such an im- mense size.
