At a previous occasion Mr. C. Clarke (7066) strongly recommended Mr. Welver for the command of the Pluto, to which Lord Carnarvon appointed Captain The Ewen and I cannot help thinking that the present move lacks very much. I think it is like an attempt to get rid of the said Mr. Welver and to give Mr. Woulfe a job from another chance.
I should be very glad if Sir A. H. Clarke would write to Mr. Courtney when at Southampton in a way that would be much to our advantage.
I look for a good cavalry man at Nice and an opportunity for Hongkong providing for his appointment there. Capt. Mr. Ewen back to the Straits. I do not think that Mr. Austin who has held his appointment in this colony for so long a time as Captain McEwen can be considered a desirable successor.
And Sir A. Clarke can have had less opportunity of judging of his fitness for the post at Hong Kong for which I am ready to recommend him.
I shall soften the Saumarez's sentiment if you desire it.

I have had an opportunity of speaking to Sir Arthur Fremantle and have made him understand that you may possibly consider it desirable to send Capt. R. Ewen back to England: he quite recognised the justice of such a course. He pointed out that it would of course be a grievous disappointment to Captain Ewen who could probably have the pick of considerable expense from having broken up his establishment at Pangkor.
Sir Andrew Clarke having left the Straits renders it perhaps unnecessary
