America continued to play havoc in the London silver market, forcing it to abandon its custom of fixing its price only when all transactions can be arranged at one level.
The amount of spot metal offered was estimated at 6,000,000. ounces, but the American Treasury was ony pre- pared to buy 450,000 ounces. Sellers were all treated on a pro rata basis.
Forward offerings were smallish, since it was early made clear that there was hardly a chance of forward quotations being fixed. But it is understood that a quantity of forward- orders have been converted to spot sales:
The belief is growing in the City's best informed circles that the American Treasury's action is a definite counter-move against the recent decisions of the Chinese Government to demonetise silver, which frustrates America's proclaimed alm to raise the purchasing power of the silver countries.
It is therefore regarded as signi feant that the American, Senator Thomas, whole-heartedly consented to the change of policy which, for the time-being, can only depress the in- ternational price tevel of the comme, dity dearest to his heart-Reuter.

As a sequel to the pepper market crisis, Howeson, Binhlegian and Hardy re-appeared at the Mansion House Police Court to-day on charges of being parties making, circulating. and publishing a prospectus which was false in material particulars with relation to the public issue of shares in James and Shakespeare, Ltd.
.Defendants' counsel applied for permission to reserve his cross-ex amination of witnesses, because they had not yet discovered wint was the care for the prosecution.

London, Dec. 11. The British war debt to the United States, including arrents, will en December 15 amount to £116,000,000, nccording to a statement mado by Mr. Cordell Hull, U.S. Secretary of State, to the Brilish Ambassador Fri Washington, which is contained in a White Paper issued to-night.
