FORMER MANAGER
FACES AMAZING ALLEGATION
Los Angeles,
Jack Kearns, whose mano. gerial genius elevated Jack Dempsey from obscurity to the world's heavyweight champion- ship, has been suspended as a fight manager pending investi- gation of a match here which officials pronounced "queer." Kearns fighter, "Hank" Baths, the Doctor's now "white bepe" and can- didate for the heavyweight title, entertained same 10,000 cash custom- ers by knocking out his sparring
mate.
WAR
The sparring mate, Ralph Nor- wood, An aging, good-natured negro, ordinarily
employed by Dr. Kearns for his man, Bath, to knock ort in gymnasiums at the rate of $1 a round.
This than the stunt was performed before more than $5,000 worth of paying guests who had come expæect- ing Bath to fight an entirely differ ent party, Terris (Leo the Lion) Hill, a dark young man from Mada- gasear. Lenn the Lion showed up supposedly drunk, however, and the venerable Norwood was recruited as a substitute.
STARTLING DICLOSURE-
These strange doings might have enlled for nothing more serious than A sexpry reprimand, had not i come forward with his explanation of the affairs.
He claimed he hadn't been plied with or until he awooned, as pre- vionisty reported by promoters, but was ordered to lay down" to Bath
try to win--and when he refused, he was given a "sobriety test" and pronounced drunk.
Then this startling disclosure was to th. Harry, Roard, now Harry Martin, hend relayed man of the State
in New York attending a medical convention, he telegraphed Inspector Kipper ordering Dr. Kearns and his man, Bath, expunged from the min- Kuitable utes until they think up a explanation.
If the contest was a deliberate 'frameup," Dr. Martin wired, “I will so that suspensions are increased to life disbarment. In Californin, and furthermore will prevail on the box- ing authorities of any state where boxing is regulated to take similar action,"
While half a dozen went-stresked members of the profession gathered at Inspector Kipper's office, waiting for Dr. Kearns to canie in. with his explanation, the Doctor clapped his gray feitora an his hend and left with young Bath for Arizona...
Merry Kid led the field of ten over the Stand Jump in the Grand National which fextured the closing card of the Autumn Meeting at the Shang hal Race Course. Bolton kept the Sutterle pony in the van practically all the way to the Morris Jump, when, following abad landing he was forced to give way to Rockylight, who, however, also fell. White Lotus came up with a lovely finish to pata the favourite and win by three lengths. Above, Mightylight taking the Stand water jump,

COMPLETE LEAGUE

SOUTH CHINA MAY
BE TESTED
Below is the complete pre- during the gramme of matches more
week-end in the Ilongkong Foot- ball League.
It would be magnificent to find ou referees adopting human Attitude to charging. There was an Instance in Inst week's game between the Recreio and Club when one of the playera received a very fair shoulder charge which, catching him the wrong i fot, sent him spinalur. And his opponent was forthwith penalised for an alleged foul,
Experience goes to show that. goalkeepers in local football are not allowed to be charged in any shape ar form. It would be a fine lesson to' Home
of our officinis if they Arsenal rould see Drake of the tackle 41 goalkeeper. Drake is perfectly fair about it, but if any local pinyers attempted the sume thing they would probably get turned off the field.
But where in Hongkong we lind stringent application of the rule concerning technical offences, we obversely find a great deal of laxity in connection with methads of play which, although not strictly illegal, are equally as dangerous. I have particularly in mind this pernicious babit, which unhappily is rapidly spreading, of jumping several yards ị through the air when there is not heaven of the player getting near the ball.. MAMAK HOCKEY a hope in
Clubs Complain Of Umpires' Absences
a
Complaints that umpires had habit of net turning up at Mamak Tournament matches were heard t a meeting of the Loure held ye terday afternoon. Capt. A. Kimmi presided, assisted by Sub-Inspector Tyler (Hon. Secretary).
The Chairman informed the megɩ- ing that with a view to eliminating this trouble the Executive Committee of the League suggested that Mr. A. E. P. Guest he elected an As. Kistant Hon. Secretary, to take sole charge of

It was stated that I.M.S, Parthian would enter the "A" Division of the League, and that they would be in- vited to ask other Navy players to represent them if they wished. The secretary of the Parthian team is Lieut. 1. Chapman, R.N., c/o Naval Yard..
The meeting was informed thal handbooks for the year were now ready and were obtained at ten cents a copy.
Before closing the meeting the Chairman requested umpires to let the Hon. Secretary know the results of matches.
Club Kecretaries were also asked to send their fixture lists to the As sistant Hon. Secretary as нoon 45 ponsible.
FUTILE, UNNECESSARY,
UNGENTLEMANLY
is a futile, unnecessary, and extremely ungentlemanly practice. and it ought to be stopped forth- with. Here again the need of It seems that imagination is felt.
before a player is pulled up for dangerous play in Hongkong he has to maim an opponent. So long as he doesn't touch a player he can eut any sort of caper. He can in- dulge in that treacherous follow- through kick with the foot travel- ling towards the other fellow's abdomen, and he can nag-ilaspu tacular double-kick volley which brings one foot up to somebody's chin. with perfect impunity-sO long as he doesn't gain contact And referees fail to see that contact or no contact, the action is the same: that everytime it is employ ed it is full of dangerous possi- bilities and that it is purely kick if the other fellow doesn't "ket packet."
A
It is the sort of thing which can be stopped and should be stopped. But unless local referees begin to take fairly quick netlon I am afraid we shall arrive at a position, similar to that when a Hongkong referee,
