DECISION
SELF-PRESERVATIONS CHINA'S AIM
NOT TALKING LIGHTLY
OF SACRIFICES
Shanghai, Nov. 20.
Evidence that the Chinese Government policy in North China will be one of non-interference is seen by most observers in the speech delivered by General Chiang Kai-shek before the Kuomintang Congress in Nanking..
One British commentator, interviewed by Reuter, Abora are accu Ethiopian warriors taken prisoner in the recent fight imp being escorted to a concentra-
said: "Chiang remains true to his programme of peace- ably conserving and building up the national strength until China can face the world with a bold front."
Japanese official circles hail the speech of the Chinese "dictator" as a "statesmanlike utterance." They draw particular attention to the passage in General Chiang's speech, reading:
"We shall not foresake penes until there is no hope for peuce. We shall not talk lightly of sacrifice until we are driven to the last extremity which makes sacrifice inevitable."
The Japanese also welvomu thu gesture towards their, country contained in the phrase:
"Our neighbour, particularly, should be deeply concerned or the peace of the Orient-for-the-com- mon good, of China and Japan. What
we seek is simply self- preservation and co-existence in the family of nations."-Reuter.

ETHIOPIAN TROOPS GAIN GROUND
EMPEROR MAY BE ON WAY TO FRONT
Harrar, Nov. 19.
The Ethiopian counter-offensive is continuing,. following the penetration of the Italian lines by a large force of warriors under Ras Seyoum's command.
At dawn to-day a vigorous assault was reported launched between Amale (which the Ethiopians claim to have recaptured on November 16) and Gorrahei. The offensive was led by Sitaurari Ayale, the Emperor's Chief Huntsman.
It is stated that heavy losses were inflicted on the defenders and the fighting continued until noon, when, the Ethiopians claimed, they succeeded in occupying the Italian positions.
