Nation's Honour For Lawrence Of Arabia

Isle of

THE name and memory of Lawrence of Arabia is to be enshrined for ever among Bri- tain's grent dead.

Arrangements have now been completed, for a national memorial service to take place in St. Paul's Cathedral next month.

Following EL meeting of 1 memorial of Lawrence's friends held in London, the Dean and Chapter have been approached to allot a precise date for the ser- vice..

This committee came into being after the funeral in the lonely Dorset churchyard to which Lawrence was borne after his fatal accident last June.

His grave thore is marked by a simple wooden cross. This bears his name and the word "Rest" in Arabic.

Services Remembered

It was felt, however, that Lawrence's greatness as a leader, and his services to the country should be given A more hiding. and a national expression.

An uppeal was fasued, signed by Field-Marshal Lord Allenby and others, inviting suggestions and contributions towards A euitable memorial.

It has now been decided that this memorial is to take the form of a bronze bust of Lawrence by Eric Kennington. This, together with a com- memorative tablet, will be placed in the crypt of St. Paul's Cathedral, where it will rest side by side with the re- mains of Nelson, Wellington, and other great leaders of the Empire.

The ceremony will be included in the forthcoming St. Paul's scr-, vice.

Some find their way to the Lon- don mortuaries. Searcely a day passoa bet a friendless woman's body is brought to the mortuaries 119 a result of an accident or through suicide. Nobody claims them and they are buried "un-

Then there are the lists of mise- ing persons themselves:-"Missing from home, Miss C-, nged thirty- nine, wearing light blue dress, blo coat, brown shoes, believed to be suffering from loss of memory."

"Girl, aged fifteen, Joan M—, palo complexion, hair wavy, brown in colour, eyes hazel, height five feet one inch"

The schoolgirl may never be found. Perhaps she has run away and entered domestic service or the bands of the white slave traf perhaps she is on the Contintent in
