FLYING BISHOP'S ARCTIC TOUR

2,000-MILES TO VISIT RED INDIAN CLERGY

Calgary, Alberta, Oct. 10. A "FLYING bishop," who drops

out of the skles beside lonely settlements in the Far North of Canada, has just told one of the most remarkable diocesan tours ever made.

Replacing Land Planes On Empire Air Routes

THE mightiest fleet of commercial aircraft the world has seen has just been laid down in Britain. By 1937 it will be in the air-operat- ing 23,000 miles of Empire air routes, running the fastest, most frequent long-distance air services in the history of air transport.

Imperial Airways have announced their first order for now equipment to meet the Government's big. Empire air speed-up plans that are to start in 1937. Under those plans they must have ready by that date an air fleet big and fast enough to carry all the British fast-class mail by the air at a cruising speed of at least 150 m.p.h. on day and night services.

Dr. Gaddes has made the journey of 3,000 miles to Calgary to attend the annual meeting of bishops and other clergy of the Church of England in Canada.

This flying bishop, what has made the expression "sky pilot" come true, is a tail, genial man of athletic build, and is the young- est bishop in Canada.

Describing his fascinating journey, he said: "Although the Yukon is about four times the size of England, there are only 4,000 white people and 2,000 Red Indians living in it.

"Settlere

are scattered over such vast distances that it has been necessary for me to travel by air to visit them."

"I chartered a senplane, piloted by a very capable ‘airman, and landed either on a lake or a river by the various settlementa.

"My first flight was one of 100 miles to a trading post where n man and his wife are the only whito residents.

"They gave me hospitality, and I suppose it was a great adven- ture for them to be visited by a bishop in this way.

Red Indian Clorgy "During the tour I went to a number of Red Indian villages. At three there were Red Indian clorgy. These Red Indians are properly ordained clergy of the Church of England and wear ordinary clerical costume.

The use of marine aircraft means that the "all red" air, route is a practical possibility. It.A.F. flying beats have already pioneer- ed this route to India.

It means also that Britain can run her air services inde- pendently of foreign quarrels that can now cut off our land 'plane air services in a night. When the "all red" route is a fnet Britain will be able to control practically the whole

In fact, Professor Wright, of the Royal Veterinary College, has just been telling dog-fanciers that the swallowing of silk stockings is one of the most frequent causes of canine illness.

"The partnership of London Films and the United Artists Dis- tributing Corporation will mark the first time that a British picture company has acquired an interest in an American world-wide distri- bution organisation.

This means that our British organisation will be able to market motion pictures all over the world."

Mr. Korda said the partnership would become effective following discussion of further details tween the parties.
