Eighteen years after the famous "Zimmermann note" senti- crystallized American ment against Germany to the point of war, the inside story of how the Department of State obtained the document was re- vealed this week with publica- tion of the "War Memoirs of Robert Lansing". The British. secret service turned it over to United States authorities. Lansing. Secretary of State from June 23, 1915, to February 13, 1920, revealed all the detalla of how the note was received, the manoeuvring by the administra- tion in making it public at a pro- pitious movement, and the rene- tion to publication on March 1, 1917.

The Zimmermann note arrived

State Department at the February 26, 1917. It "had been obtained by secret agents of the British government and forward- ed by them to London, where it had just been deciphered by means of a complicated German code." Lansing wrote. Where the British got the note was not mer- tioned.
