STRATEGIC RAILWAY
IS JUGULAR VEIN OF ETHIOPIA
VITAL LINK BETWEEN ADDIS ABABA AND THE SEA
Paris, Sept. 26.
The French-owned railway line between Addis Ababa and Djibouti is regarded by military strategists and economic experts as the jugular vein of Ethiopia.
The steady flow of merchandise on that tenuous track, serpentining through malaria-tainted lowlands, gaping ravines and eucalyptus-studded hillsides is the life blood of the black empire of Haile Selassie. In the event of war with Italy, its choking off would mean death and its con- tinuance, sustenance even to a battle-ripped nation.
Connecting French Somaliland, the source of Ethiopia's strength with Addin and development, Ababa, capital and military strong- hold, the railway ranks as one of the greatest achievements in the history of engineering, being superseded only by such famous communications ways N the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal and the trais-Andean railway.
Line Opened In 1917 ' First conceived In 1894 when the Negus, Menelik H, granted a conccasion for construction of the line from Djibouti to Harrar and thence to Entollo, then the capi-
tal of Ethiopia, the present line was not, completed and officially inaugurated until June10metr
measures exactly 784 kilometres (486 miles) from Djibouti to Addis Ababa.
According to the lust report is- sued by the Paris headquarters of the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiu- pian de Djiboutt a Addis Ababa, as the line is called in French, the company had a capital of slightly more than $1,000,000 and is con- atantly increasing the speed and comfort of the trains.

Britain's far-flung imperial forces have moved to defend, If necessa ry, the Suez ennal, the island of Malta and Gibraltar, key points to the Mediterranean, threatened by the increasingly eritieni Italo-Ethiopian situation. Gibraltar, nt the narrow western end of the Mediterrottenn; the island of Maith, fortified base of operations squarely on the east-west navigation line, and the Suez ennal gateway to the east, give Britain control of this nagivation route. The Importance of this control is indicated by the fact that Britain has intimated that even possible international complications will not prevent her from making every effort to continue as the dominant power in the Mediterranean. Three battle cruisere, one of them HM.S. Heod; the super-aircraft enrrier M.S. Glorious, and submarine and aerial forces have been concentratest near the mouth of the Suez, while portion of Britain's China isquidçon has been concentrated at Aden..

-Lady Astor
London, Sept. 5.
MART Britons imbibing their whisky and soda in May- fair to-day, ran decidedly un-British temperatures as they discussed the astonishing remark Lady Astor said she had made to her son on the subject of birth control.

Equally startling, to the conserva. tive and rich friends of Lady Astor was her announcement of her con- version to the near-communist idea that children should be removed from lon close association with their mothers at an early age. After her birth control blast be- fore the pedagoguen, Lady Astor told them the old theory of an mother being the best parson te bring up a child was "out of date." Which Son?
