population. however, we strike a terrible picture.

Infant mortality amongst European children under one year of age also compares favourably with Britain, Germany, Belgium, Den- mark, Scotland, North Ire- land, Austria, Bulgaria and others.

This interesting information is gleaned from the 'Annual Re- port of the Director of Medical Services, and from statistics

Million Population For Centenary

|HONGKONG WILL SOON

BECOME SEVEN FIGURE CITY

I will take Hongkong less than its first century of ex- istence to reach a population exceeding a million.

Official estimates place Hong- kong's population at the end of 1934 at 944, 492.

At the end of the current year it will exceed 960,000, and at the end of next year will be within ten thousand of the mil- lion mark.

Of the estimated civilian popula- tion of 941,492 at the end of last year, 923,584, or over 97 per cent. was Chinese, while 20,908, or 2.21* per cent., was non-Chinese.

Slightly over 4,000 Europeans and Americans reside in the Urban area of Hongkong.

Kowloon proves a more popular residential area, 4,702 Europeans and Americans residing on the mininland. Of other non-Chinese races, 5,704 reside in the Urban aren of Victoria, 115 reside in villages on the Island and 5,868 reside on the mainland.-

The majority of Hongkong's Chinese population resides on the island, 373,199 making their homes in the Urban area and 47,059 re- aiding in the villages. On the other hand, 300,550 Chinese live in Kowloon and New Kowloon, while an additional 102,776 reside in the | New Territories.

Only 25 Europeans and Ameri- cans are listed as living in the New Territories.

During 1934 three times the total number of people resiling in Hong- kong arrived and departed by river steamer or railway, 2,789,039 ar- riving and 2,811,100 departing.
