MEN WILL WATCH' BABIES

(Continued from Page 6.)

"I have had sent me this week a book" he said. "I think it is call- ed "Martha, M.P. It is written of a time some years ahead, and if you read what men have become-the | spoilt durlings of the women—and the masculine position of women. well, you have got something to look forward to, those of you, who are young men." (Laughter.)

Mrs. Tate (U., Willesden) de- clared that tho under-payment of women would inevitably lead to n lower standard of the life for the people,

The Government and set the worst possible example, because in the Civil Service they systematically employed women at.a lower rate of pay than men. That position was steadily getting worse, with the result that there was an increase in the number of women employed and a decrease in the number of men.

Mr. West (Soc., Hammersmith) said 800,000 more women were em- ployed in industry now than twenty years ago, and the chief reason was that they were cheaper than men.

GOVERNMENT'S REPLY

Mr. R. S. Hudson, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Labour, re- plying, said if they took industry as a whole there was not the disparity in pay for equal work which was very commonly alleged.

He did not think it could be said with any truth that, taking the last ten years, women had materially displaced men in industry. Since 1911 there had been a tiny increase in the number of women employed. It had been said that women were

displacing mon because they did

repetition work more cheaply than

men.

WILL PROTECT YOU.

THESE are pervous complaints that quickly acid to the soothing influence of 'ASPRO

So many thousands of people have proved it--if you have not proved it for yourself. you will generally find that your friends can tell you that 'ASPRO' definitely does banish headaches in a few minutes-brings sweet sleep to the sleepless and soothes away your irrita- bility quickly and effectively. So why suffer? 'ASPRO' does its work without harming the heart or the stomach. The time has passed when it was necessary to take dangerous drugs and narcotics for these irritating complaints. 'ASPRO' is safe, sure and effective in action-you can take it anywhere--at any time. The fact that after ingestion in the system 'ASPRO' is an anti-pyretic or fever-reducer an anti-periodica germicide internal antiseptic and solvent of Uric Acid, makes it one of the most useful medicines ever given to mankind. Its parity and efficiency is vouched for by doctors and nurses all over the world.

The number of men employed bad Increased in proportion more than the number of women. If they took the lists of trades in this country where the number of women had increased during the last ten years, the number of men engaged in these industries had not fallen.

WHY A LOWER RATE?

Major Hills (U., Ripon) said thaf in the Civil Service men and women were called on to undergo the same examination and to do the same work, but they did not get the same pay:

"

It had been said by the Parlia- mentary Secretary that wamen were more efficient than men in repetition work. Why did ther receive lower pay?

Sir P. Harris (Lib,, Bethnal, Green) said that what they wanted was a Government lead that should make it clear to the country that they were not employing women to do men's work because it was cheaper.
